When a child needs support to help navigate through big life challenges, the community at Team Up is happy to provide that support. We know how tough it can be for a kid who has experienced trauma, and our team of mentors, staff and case managers work with each family to foster resilience and address trauma.
Team Up Mentoring utilize a holistic approach to working with young people affected by trauma, providing youth development programs that both address the trauma and foster resilience. To do this, we offer case-management and youth mentoring services in the following areas: education, wellness, long-term, healthy relationships, and transportation.
At Team Up, we believe that that the secret to success is a love of learning. Because Team Up students often have challenges and barriers to their education due to trauma, each mentor is committed to meeting students where they are and providing them with all of the opportunities for educational support that they may need. From promoting literacy in our programs to providing scholarships to specialized private schools, we are committed to the academic success of each young person in our program.
School Involvement
What better way to know how we can better serve our students than by involving a mentor in the education of each student. It is integral that we are aware of how students learns at school so that we can help when they are outside the classroom.
Teacher Liaison and Grade Monitoring
At Team Up, we communicate regularly with the school and teachers of each young person in our youth mentoring program. Checking grades weekly and communicating with teachers about the needs of each child, Team Up helps to monitor the success of each student in the program.
Our community works to assist with their success in school as well as other important points such as building self-esteem and preparing for college. It is important for the development of youth-adult partnerships within our mentoring community that the students are aware of the care and concern our mentors have for their success.
Special Education
A student with special education needs may require additional assistance than even parents and teachers (or other adults in the child's life) can provide. At Team Up, we find out what types of needs a student has and the best ways to assist the student, parents, and others involved in the student's education and youth development.
Special Education Advocacy
Attending a meeting with school officials can be scary and overwhelming, especially when it deals with the specific needs of children in SPED programs. At Team Up, we are not only dedicated to building strong youth-adult partnerships but also developing relationships with parents and offering support whenever necessary. Our youth mentoring team helps parents navigate through each step of the Special Education process, working with schools, doctors, and specialists to ensure each child has access to the kind of care in Georgia they need.
Private School Scholarships
Helping a student to thrive academically sometimes requires providing alternative educational environments. Through our Georgia mentoring program, Team Up can do precisely this. We are proud to be able to help students attend private schools based on their individual academic needs.
Team Up’s goal is for the next generation to practice physical, spiritual, and emotional health. We ensure kids receive medical and dental care, have access to professional counseling, and experience consistent spiritual support. Team Up Wellness Initiatives include:
Medical Oversight
From helping families schedule appointments to transporting children to those appointments, we sure each child can access critical medical and dental services throughout their childhood.
Counseling Oversight
Since mental and emotional health is just as important as physical health, kids in Team Up also receive assistance in accessing counseling services in Georgia. The adults who match with the students are truly invested in their overall health and realize that mentoring with Team Up means more than just occasional tutoring.
Bible Club
Providing an outlet for the youth in our program to grow spiritually is also a vital part of Team Up’s approach to serving them. We pray with children and families and connect them with local churches to participate in services or programs like Vacation Bible School.
Summer Camp
From making sure kids are safe and supervised to creating opportunities for skill development and FUN, Team Up makes sure kids receive seamless services over the summer break. Just because the school year has ended does not mean that the mentoring from our community should stop. We are happy to report that a mentor is always here for our students, even during the hot Georgia summer!
Field Trips
Experiential learning is key to unlocking dreams in the hearts and minds of youths. Team Up provides opportunities to explore the world around us through the day and overnight trips. Of course, your mentor will accompany the student and report on the events of the trip.
Nutrition
Because we understand the impact that a regular, nutritious diet can have on a child’s overall health, we makes sure that the children in the program have access to healthy, nutritious food regularly. No child's report should ever say that they are hungry.
Long-term, positive adult relationships make all the difference in the life of a child affected by trauma. Our Elementary Mentoring program and Teen Leadership Academy provide the opportunity for kids to learn and grow with mentors-- not just for one season of life-- but for the long-term.
Elementary Mentoring
The first step in Team Up’s unique approach to empowering young students affected by trauma involves mentoring from Pre-K through 5th grade. Team Up provides caring volunteer mentors who nurture little ones and provide education through mentoring around four core areas: financial literacy, emotional regulation, career skills, and spiritual growth.
Mentors meet with children twice a week and work alongside individual TEAMs to provide academic support, help to access health care, transportation, and family support services. A mentor with Team Up knows that mentoring goes beyond helping with homework - it is for all aspects of life.
Teen Leadership Academy
The Teen Leadership Academy is the next step in Team Up’s unique approach to mentoring and empowering young people affected by trauma. Designed to help teens make responsible, healthy, and informed choices, the Teen Leadership Academy provides youths with opportunities to receive life skills, leadership, and personal empowerment training.
Tackling issues related to substance abuse, relationships, personal finance, nutrition, and mental health, the Teen Leadership Academy helps to equip teens with the skills and knowledge needed to step into the driver’s seat of their own lives.
Team Up provides tools for young people to not only report on and overcome the trauma they've experienced but also build resilience to confidently navigate their futures. Team Up fosters resilience by providing mentoring and opportunities for young people to participate in sports, extracurricular activities, and community service projects.
Peer Focused Projects
As part of the Teen Leadership Academy, Team Up teens participate in Youth Action Teams focused on planning and implementing peer-focused projects related to preventing underage drinking and opioid dependence. Members of TLA attend Georgia Teen Institute each summer where they learn the most effective tools in prevention as well as teamwork and leadership skills. They are then asked to complete and report on 6 youth-led prevention projects each year in their home community.
Recent studies report that participating in team sports may significantly reduce the long-term likelihood of depression and anxiety for people with childhood trauma. That's why each night at Team Up, students have the ability to explore and engage with a number of physical education opportunities. On a typical night at Team Up, you might see kids playing basketball, practicing yoga, participating in relay races, or playing capture the flag.
